1-9-18 Thank you all for the sweet Christmas gifts and kind notes. I am truly the luckiest first grade teacher to have such sweet and kind students. I am excited to be starting our new IB unit titled 'Who We Are'. This area of social studies, science and physical education is pretty fun for the students as they explore many aspects of health and human nature. We have three lines of inquiry/study over the next 6 weeks, which are Being Responsible Citizens, Making Healthy Choices, and Safety. There will be a couple of homework assignments that will relate to our lines of inquiry in addition to the normal work but I will make sure that you have plenty of time to complete them.
Unit start- To kick off our first line of inquiry we will be learning about Ruby Bridges, Rosa Parks, and Dr. King. We will be talking about character traits, creating a story line, writing friendly letters to each other and talking about what we can do (even in first grade) to make the world a better place.
Math- We are practicing using different methods for subtraction which gives the students the opportunity to discover what works best for them. We are also going to start using fact families to add and subtract which is a new concept, but they are starting to see how they relate.
Language Arts- This week we are adding suffixes "ing" as well as learning about conjunctions.
Reading & Writing- We will be reading 'Click Clack Moo' and 'Diary of a Fly' as we learn the difference between a fact and an opinion. The kids will practice a small writing activity in relation to both to prepare them for their opinion writing assessment.
FYI There will be no school for students on Monday the 8th due to end of quarter. Grades will be locked that day. Also, we are out on the 15th in observation of Dr. Martin Luther Kings birthday. Please remember to save your pop tops. They are part of our First grade service project to help the Ronald Mcdonald House.

I believe that we are focusing on problem and solution as well as what can happen in a story vs what couldn't happen. For writing we are writing our last opinion piece for the year about turkeys. Students will be required to tell me three reasons why they do or do not like turkeys. We will be reading some funny books to help them form their opinion.

Things to look forward to- The field trip is October 16th. I will send more information with Friday's homework. Student Led Conferences are coming up the 4th and 5th of October. You may start signing up for your day and time through the Hawthorn Academy main webpage. Select the our team tab, South Jordan, find my picture and then schedule conference. Please keep in mind that part of being at an IB school we do not do the typical Parent Teacher Conference rather we do Student Led Conferences. During this time your student will tell you what they are learning and show off some of their work. I will be available for questions after your child talks, but I will have to be strict on the allotted 15 minutes. If you are more than 5 minutes late I will have to ask you re-schedule your time if a slot is available if not we can set up a private conference when I am able.
Homework- I have added a homework tab. I will do my best to upload each weeks homework with the exception of the math. These pages come directly from the students workbooks and I do not have extras. Again, homework is due on Wed. If you child finished early I will leave it in the folder until Wed. because I don't trust myself not to lose it and I prefer to put them in the grade book all at once. I will accept them up to Friday without docking points. I will be collecting reading minutes this Friday so make sure your calendars or time is in your child's homework folder.

Save the trees! If you didn't receive the homework for this week please shoot me an email. Parents please help your child to remember their homework folder everyday. It is part of our morning routine to turn it in. Those who don't bring it fail to follow the morning routine which affects all of us.
Math- We are still working on addition and making 4 & 5, 6 & 7, and 8. We will be taking an informative assessment to see how well we are learning addition. I will be keeping all assessments until student led conferences but you can check your child's grade anytime in Aspire.

9-5 thru 9-8 Two more weeks until spelling and phonograms start!! Remember parents homework is due each Wednesday. Due to the holiday and the numerous students that were absent on Friday I will accept homework this Friday. It is pretty easy and doesn't require a lot of time currently. We have been taking practice tests to get them ready for the real deal in three weeks. I am planning on starting reading groups next week despite the fact that not all students have been tested for reading levels. Also, please look for Imagine Learning login information to be coming soon.
Language Arts- We are currently learning about character development and traits. Look for more regarding this at student led conferences.
Math- Please parents help your students with math vocabulary. We are really struggling with part + part = whole or in all is the same as equals. We will continue with addition this week with the new vocabulary words sum, and finding the question to an answer.
Social Studies- We are finishing up our community and working together aspect of I.B.. This week student will create their own communities using art, rocks and boxes taken from the story Roxaboxen, a beautiful book which celebrates imagination and a time that exists within the authors memory.
Handwriting- Studies show that there is a direct correlation between students hand writing and their ability to read fluently. I am very focused on student handwriting. We practice this skill each day. As of this week handwriting will be part of your child grade. Each Friday I will assess what we have practiced. I have started entering grades into Aspire so please check this regularly as It may be difficult for me to recall your students performance on a particular assignment if to much time passes. SCHOLASTIC ORDERS ARE DUE THIS WEEK!

Well here we are!!! 1st grade 2017-18 and we are having way to much fun.
This is where you will look to see what we are learning in the upcoming week.
Math- I had tried to start math this week but the kiddos are not familiar with the vocabulary used in the first chapter so I spent a lot of time using number talk instead. Next week I will attempt to move forward with the math as planned.
Language Arts- We are learning letter formation and sounds again. Summer seems to rob these littles of their ability to remember all of what they learned so we will be reviewing for a couple of weeks. So far we have learned BSMACTDLRI. Our upcoming sounds and letters are JGHON. We are doing a little blending and writing words. Please encourage your child to read words by sounding them out. Let them try and even fail before you jump in to help them.
We are also talking about who is telling the story when we read and what are the characters traits. Students created their own character and decided what traits they would give it.
Writing- As mentioned above we are writing the letters and their formation. Ask your child if they can write their numbers correctly using the baseball method.
Social Studies & Science- We have started our first IB planner which is called Sharing the Planet. Our Line of inquiry is 'Society works towards a common goal'. During this area of study we learn how it's better to work together and why. This week we read several books, Rainbow Fish, Pigsty, Fancy Nancy and the Mean Girl, and talked about how we should treat each other. We will be making our central agreements(class rules) as well.
Next week we will be learning about communities and community helpers.
